7 Questions to Eva Sonaike
Hello Eva, can you describe yourself in a few words for our readers?
I'm Eva Sonaike, creative director and founder of the London-based home textiles company of the same name.
I am a passionate and energetic woman who lives and breathes interior design and has a passion for African textiles and design.
My work encompasses luxury African modernism for everyday living. Don't worry about looking professional. Be yourself. There are over 1.5 billion websites, but it’s your story that will set you apart. If, as you reread the words, you don't hear your own voice in your head, that's a sign that you still have a way to go.
Be clear, have confidence and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it will continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal is for it to reflect the present moment. The rest will write itself. It's always like this.
Where did you start to get to where you are today, can you tell us about your journey?
I was born in Germany to Nigerian parents and grew up in a house filled with design, color and art. From a young age I was very interested in interior design, but I initially pursued a career in journalism, where I specialized in fashion and design.
But after several years as a senior fashion journalist, I wanted to pursue what I was passionate about and founded my interior design company. It has grown over the years and today we are one of the leading African interior design companies in the world.
Can you tell us a little more about your origins and the influence they have had on your textile and home accessories brand?
My parents' house and my upbringing had a big influence on my overall design aesthetic. I grew up in Germany and celebrated two very different cultures equally. I've always had an eye for color and design and I can use this to regularly change the design of my teenage bedroom.
What do you think of the theme of our gallery ?
The fact that it is the first all-female gallery.
I love that your gallery specializes only in female artists. I feel like artwork and design can still be very masculine and brings together artists from across the continent.
Does this type of gallery also exist in London?
Not to my knowledge.
Are there any female designers who particularly inspire you?
I love the works of Lina Iris Viktor. His use of color and contrast is so sublime. I would love to own one of his pieces.
